Homework Zone

The library was delighted to receive continued sponsorship from Delta Electricity, This funding enables us to employ a qualified teacher (Chelsea) to help with school homework two afternoons a week. This is a free service to the community.

The homework zone is open during school terms on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm.

Storytime

Storytime is held each week on Tuesday and Wednesday at 10.30 am. This activity is free and designed for preschool children accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The children arrive at the library and we sing songs, read stories and complete a craft activity usually relating to the book just read. This is a free service.

Book Week

Book Week is celebrated each year in August. Any book written by an Australian author published in the calendar year prior to the current calendar year can be nominated. Titles are submitted to a group of judges one from each state and territory. A notable list is created and the shortlist is developed. In August, the winners are announced. Each year there is a different theme to capture the joy of children's books.

The library holds different activities during Book Week. This year the library will be visiting different schools and organising tours of the library. Each year there is a competition held between all school.

The categories usually are:

  • pre-school
  • infants
  • primary upper/lower
  • high school

This competition changes each year depending on the theme. A local person from the community is asked to be judge and prizes are awarded during a presentation at the end of the week.

Books for Babies

The purpose of the "Books for Babies" program is to assist carers in developing reading and communication skills in a manner that is fun for everyone concerned. It's our way of supporting the "Spread the Word" initiative originally introduced by Lithgow Learning City.

Lithgow Library Learning Centre in conjunction with Lithgow Community Health distribute a book kit to all new mothers whilst they are accommodated at the hospitals (Private and Public) maternity sections.

The kit contains information and resources aimed at sharing many wonderful hours introducing from birth the joys of communication. As well as a complimentary story book and reusable library bag, the kit contains suggestions on ways to best utilise time to encourage a love of reading.

Any new mothers who may have been overlooked during the distribution process are most welcome to visit the Lithgow Library Learning Centre where we will present them with a "Books for Babies Reading Pack".

Books for Babies principle will be reinforced during babies 18 months immunisation clinic, where mothers will be presented with a second instalment of the kit, compliments from Centrelink.

Have you got your FREE BOOK KIT yet?

If not, and you qualify visit Lithgow Library Learning Centre soon and we will give you one.
